one time chance
a mate of mine is due in naples florida for a fortnights holiday soon
i want a worm drive saw, a swing plate for a largish makita and a collins coping foot for a festool body grip jigsaw
i need a bit of help to assist him....................
the name address and zipcode of a REAL tool shop that deals with all these companies (and is big enough to have the gear, in stock, on the day)
the best salesman to talk to in the shop
the make of worm drive to go for (my guess is skilsaw or milwalkee) and model number
lastly the swing table is for a makita 14 inch saw (well shy of 14 inch). i need a model number of the swing tableLimey Carpenter

Re: one time chance
Tom, I don't think the Collins foot or the swing table are going to be sold in most tool stores, but I could be wrong. You'd have to find a place that's selling far more than the average lumberyard tool department. The worm drive you can get anywhere, and I would get a Skil Mag 77, even though you can't plug it into the outlets you have. For the swing table talk to these guys http://www.bigfootsaws.com/
Is it not possible to order these things over there? I wouldn't be surprised--I hear Canadian guys wondering how to get tools from the U.S. If your friend tries to bring that stuff back on a plane he'll be thrown into our equivalent of the Tower of London.

Ditto. You can take tools on a plane, in your checked baggage, but I've never seen a Collins foot in a tool store, nor a swing table. The wormdrive you probably want the 220/240V version, so it would have to be ordered, it wouldn't be in stock.

Re: one time chance
Tom,
For the coping foot, i have ordered directly from collins tool company online and they shipped it here to london, no problem, shipping was reasonable and fast. almost all my tools I or someone visiting me lugged over in a suitcase, i never had any problems, and those 110 site plugs are easy to fit.

Re: one time chance
we have the same problem here, toolshops by the thousand but only a handful of specialised shops
thank you for the bigfootsaws website. and the heads up on the mag 77
110 volt isnt a problem, civils sites banned 240 volt tools 30 years ago
although a keen eyed safety officer wouldnt let a worm drive on site anyway
i think the problem with worm drives in europe is that they dont have a riving knife
the collins coping foot is prooving problematical
getting jailed makes the offence a tad serious
is it the US law forbidding the attempted export of american technology that will land you jail
or that airlines (quite understandably) are wary of carpenters remodelling planes in flightLast edited by Tom Bainbridge; 07-04-2009 at 02:02 AM.

Re: one time chance
Tom, sounds like your friend should come equipped with a credit card. Order the stuff you want online delivered to him in Florida, have him scrape them up a little, and bring them home in checked luggage. Just don't have him bring a blade in the passenger cabin.

Re: one time chance
I have used Brinker Brown Fastener and Supply. They carry a large selection of tools and fasteners in Naples and their main store in Ft. Myers.
They carry Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee, etc.
I would look into the Makita 5377MG, it is light, and has a lot of power.

Re: one time chance
Here's collins tools dealer list. Its mostly midwest and northeast, nothing listed in Fl. In my area western tool stocks collin coping foots, jim's clam clamps, etc. great place. Very few places are like that though.
http://www.collinstool.com/base.php?page=dealers.htm
I would just talk to the place you are staying and order the stuff online and get it shipped. Online you'll never worry about a wide selection to chose from and the prices will be better. When I've ordered from collins tool directly, I received the tools in 3 days.

dgbldr
we dont have sidewinders at all because they dont have riving knives
they dont pass eu safety and therefore cant be sold in the eu
it isnt illegal to own one, but any accident with them is uninsurable
DAMM ive suddenly realised............
i have an 18v li-ion makita saw and that does not have a riving knife
that makes a nonsense of things unless the rules for battery tools are differentLimey Carpenter

Re: one time chance
Tom,
Shipping within the states is fast and cheap. Just order it and arrange with his hotel to recieve it, or any friends he may be visiting. While I am in favor of a good local toolstore - you know what you want and will not be in a position for them to provide post-purchase support.
I've ordered tons of stuff this way to be brought into Canada and never had an issue at any point in the ordering.
Try amazon.com for the saw and order directly from collins and bigfoot.
