Velux Manual Vent Skylight Question
I'm building a roof over what is going to be a spa room, and the customer wants 4 manually venting skylights installed. 2 will be over a swim spa, 1 over a hot tub and 1 over an open area. The 2 not over the swim spa aren't a concern when it comes to accessing the unit with the extension opening crank, but the two over the swim spa will be a little more difficult. Access to the units from directly below will be difficult, as they will be centered over the 8' wide spa. The ceiling will be sloped so the height off the floor to the crank on the skylight will be around 10'. Standing 4'-5' to the side of the skylight, will the angle (aprox 40deg @ 5' off the floor) be easily accessible to operate the window? I'll be using 2x8 rafters. I'll email Velux also but thought I'd try you guys first.

Re: Velux Manual Vent Skylight Question
Consider using the hard wired velux models you can open
with a remote. They work great.

Re: Velux Manual Vent Skylight Question
Can you provide a floor plan with basic dimensions? Four years ago I built a sun room using the same units and the cranks worked well at various angles. I remember test-cranking them at a Home Depot display before buying them.

Mike
Tried selling them on the electric models, but they really only will use them if the manuals won't work.

Re: Velux Manual Vent Skylight Question
I wonder what they have against electric? I'm going to flip a couple of switches and close my eclectic ones now when I go to bed, an added bones is they have a rain sensor and since I forget and leave mine open all the time, with the rain sensor they close if it should rain, try that with a manual crank!

Re: Velux Manual Vent Skylight Question
Jeremy, I've got a couple of crank Veluxes installed at about the same height. I've always openned from directly in front. I'll try them from the side next time I'm on site (next week some time) and let you know. My units are installed on a 2X10 rafter and the wells flare out as you move to the inside.

Re: Velux Manual Vent Skylight Question
Jeremy, I was on site this morning. My skylights are 10' from the bottom of the well to the floor and about 12' from the crank mechanism to the floor. I stood on a 18" stool to try to duplicate your specs. I was able to open the unit but the cranking was rough, bumpy etc. . I had the feeling that repeated usage might loosen the the ring that the handle hooks on to. The cranking angle would,of course, be less severe if one was to operate the crank while sitting on the floor.

Re: Velux Manual Vent Skylight Question
Thanks for the input. They decided just to frame for electric skylights for the future. For now they are just going to screen in the room, but in the future if they go with some sort of hard wall then they will do the skylights.
