Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
I read the earlier threads regarding the Tacoma rust buy back, but I wanted to renew it so I am starting another thread...
I had my toy checked on sat and they said "it is not safe to drive". Kelly BB is $6200 for a buy back of about $9300. This is for a 99 2wd with 168k miles.
I did several hours of searching on online and in 4 dealers. The problem is I can't replace it with ANY Tacoma for less it than $15k! I am wondering if the Kelly BB has devalued the Tacomas because of the rust issue.
I have heard rumors that Toyota has paid substantially more than 1.5 Kelly BB.
??? What has your experience been???? Thanks!-> Dave

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
Dave I have heard that if you take your truck in for an inspection and they find it "unsafe" you have to be ready to relinquish the truck on the spot to take the deal.
That does not sound like your experience. I was wondering if I had to take my lumber rack and shell off before I took it in for a look.
Could you see noticeable rust when you looked under your truck?
Sorry - no answers - just more questions...
Ask them what they will give you towards something sitting on the lot? That 1.5 may shoot up a bit if you drive off in a new rig...

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
Now, is that Kelley Blue Book for sale by a dealer, or selling to a dealer?
BTW- Kelley Blue Book is one of the biggest, stupidest scams running in the country. They weight toward higher prices when buying from a dealer, when the dealer has no incentive to know the real condition of the car, and the first thing they do if someone turns in their maintenance records is to throw them away without looking at them. That way they can do their crummy, half assed inspection, shampoo it, and sell it. Any private owner will be more honest and reliable than a used car lot, with the possible exception fo a toyota dealer selling it with a long warranty. Everyone else who uses KBB is participating in a used-car-dealer scam. I won't go by KBB person to person price when selling my vehicles, I only go by dealer pricing.http://www.lavrans.com

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
dealer pricing is higher and the KB explanation is it covers detail and fixes as Greentree stated along with OH&P.
the pricing is on the KB website. Dealer Purchase or Private Party sale

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
Dave,
I noticed that is the way they worded my letter too. They wanted to keep it on the spot but I had my cap on it and a load of tools in back. They cannot force you to leave it on the spot. In fact when I dropped it off monday and wanted my plates they made it clear that I needed to keep the plates and insurance on the vehicle until it was transferred to Toyota. The loaner is nice - a 4wd tacoma - probably $30k. At least I have it for 30 days free!
There was some noticeable rust, but the mechanic found it severe at the spring mount - he said it was barely connected to anything.
They called today and offered me $9k. I asked how much it was worth with the cap (an ARE commercial cap w/hd ladder rack) and they said NOTHING. They are only covering factory installed items. The cap was about $1500 with all the add-ons and color matching. I am glad I took it off. If I dont get another vehicle it fits I will sell it. At least I'll get something for it.
On one hand I am glad they are making this easy - but I am really p.... that I cant find anything even reasonably close to a replacement. I am also REALLY p.... that I have been driving around insuch an unsafe vehicle! I have been to 6 toyota dealers and they have very few used tacomas and nothing less that $15k - and thats for tacos with 70k miles! None of the dealers is willing to make me a great deal on a used taco either. They have so few and they are in demand so they just dont care. My next step is to call Toyota corporate and see if I can get anywhere.
I heard from a couple of dealer that they will give you an additional incentive discount if you are buying a new toyota. One dealer said that they are offering an additional $500 discount if you buy a used toyota from a dealer, but the other dealer did not know anything about that.
I actually found a nice F-150 today. 2005 20k miles 4wd (probably 15mpg! vs 25 on a taco) mint condition but the dealer has had it for a while and is willing to sell it for $14.5 - the web ad shows it listed for $20K back in the spring. I am going to do a carfax and some R&D but toyota may be forcing me to a ford.
The best used toyota prices are actually on the tundras - but they are no real bargain either. Money is real tight right now so I am stuck looking for used - but there are some great deals on new if you can swing it - esp the tundras (and other gas hogs like the F-150 I am looking at). Because its a money making vehicle I am more willing to pay the gas bill that the additional purchase price atthe moment.Last edited by Dave-A1; 11-11-2008 at 03:22 PM.

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
with toyotas current 0% financing you'd be way better off buying a new one than a used.especially with 9 or 10k down, and them hurting like hell to sell tundras.whatever you do i wouldn't buy a used ford.
you can't really complain though they're giving you 9k for a 10 year old 2 wheel drive truck.something that in my book is worthless anyways.if it's a truck it should be 4wd.

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
Always have- my vehicles are always in better condition than any dealer in the USA has ever knowingly offered, with better tires, and the entire service history of the vehicle so it can be proven that the maintenance was followed. BTW, the only vehicles that needed repair, I told the owner what was wrong with it, I gave him my mechanic's report on the vehicle with their recommendations of what needed to be done, what should be done, and what can be put off, along with the estimated cost of necessary repairs. I also give them the name of my mechanic, his number and contact info.
Dealers throw all that information away, they do the cheapest possible repairs, mostly just enough to get the truck to pass a basic inspection. The whole line about "repairs" is mostly b.s. They don't repair, they band-aid. That's one reason why buying from private parties will almost always get you a better vehicle- you only buy if they have the service records. Then you know the service conditions at the very least, and you get a chance to gauge the type of person who owned the vehicle. You get neither of those with a dealer. And why should a dealer get more OH&P than the original owner who took care of the vehicle? The greasy slimebag who vacuums it and puts a tree on the mirror, don't offer warranties, and make the whole process as drawn out and painful as possible trying to chisel every last penny out of you? Screw them.Last edited by Lavrans; 11-11-2008 at 09:03 PM.

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
Dave - thanks for taking the time to explain that experience for me and others. Interesting to hear your experience.
Mine is an 01 and I was thinking about stopping by and having them take a look. I have no time to deal with a new truck these days; but your rust story compels me to stop in.
That leads me to wonder why they state that they will buy / take you truck immediately. Scares some people from bring them in?
I'll post my results when I stop by...

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
I got $10100 for my old 96' 4X extra cab V6 with nearly 300k on it. Toyota buys these things back at 1.5 times KBB - Excellent Condition even if it is trashed.
They gave me a loaner, some kid crossed the double yellow and crashed into me, I flipped and totaled that loaner. Got another loaner, didn't' wreck that one. Kept it for a month.
Then they gave me a coupon for $1000k off a new Toy.
This is a deal that seams to good to be true but isn't - no wonder the big 3 are going down.

Re: Tacoma rust buy back - what did you get?
I think I started a bit of a debate as to buying another toyota vs an F-150. I am going to start another thread with that subject to keep this one focused on the toyota buy backs.
