That time of year, you can sweat, play golf, or hang out at some really nice topless bars- is that enough to fill three days for you? I know it's enough for me.......

Steve - I am an ex AZ guy. If you get the chance, take a drive up to Sedona if you have never been out west. Stay a night. You'll probably never forget that place.

PHX is a huge city that requires a lot of driving to do anything. Oh, and it is quite hot...

My favorite museum there is the Heard Museum downtown.

Still going, will stay in Phoenix 3 nights, Sedona 2 nights, take a run to Williams for train ride to Grand Canyon. How bad is driving around Phoenix? Will be back night before return flight, need to plan how much time to drop rental and catch flight.
Any close stuff worth a look around Phoenix ?
Any recommendations for a place to stay in Sedona? We looked at Garlands.
    No hiking or whitewater stuff.
    Thanks

Tortilla flats is a nice, scenic, drive. You can do dinner on a steamboat just south of there at Canyon Lake. I can't say whether or not the steamboat is worth it.

Greasewood flats is another decent western, evening place.

    You can check out Rawhide.

We have several casinos out here.

You can always walk around Mill avenue in Tempe. Lots of shopping and dining. Will be hot.

Are you looking for western places or Scottsdale type places?

L'auberge in Sedona is my favorite place to stay. You can get a creekside cabin. Creek may be slow right now. Price is a little high.

You definitely want to check out Tlaquepaque in Sedona.

    101 is a loop.

Stay away from northern 101 east in the mornings. Stay away from eastern 101 south in the mornings. Oppsite is not so bad.

Stay away from 51 south in the mornings. North isn't so bad.

Stay away from 202 east in the mornings. West isn't so bad.

Stay away from I 17 morning or evening.

Stay away from 60 west in the mornings. East isn't that good either but not as bad.

    Opposite directions apply for evenings.

Morning traffic begins around 7AM and ends around 9 AM.
Evening traffic begins around 3PM and ends around 6 PM.

If you plan on driving around quite a bit, I highly recommend packing a GPS system, or at least subscribing to your cell phone's GPS/ navigator. I tried to find my way around San Antonio last year and learned my lesson half way through.

Designer who I get leads from, said to check out Frank LLoyd Wright's Taliesin House, also found there is a FLW Biltmore in Phoenix.

Taliesin West is in Scottsdale Az.

Amazes me that he got students to pay him and provide the labor to build both Taliesin's (the original is in Spring Green Wi.).

    Good branding I guess.

Have a good trip Steve... If you have the time - a drive to Sedona via 89 (one direction is nice) rather than I-17 each way. Head to Prescott off I-17, and then head north through to Sedona via Jerome.

Andre - I can not believe Rawhide still is in existence.... Steve in the early 80's our extended family would come visit from NJ 2x a year and we went to Rawhide every visit for about 12 years. I think it is mandatory for any one form NJ to go to Rawhide - they were all from North Jersey...

I have not been through for a while - I remember when they connected I-10 through downtown via the tunnel. Otherwise it was I-17 and US 360 (now US 60). Those other roads you speak of did not exist yet; we did have high school parties under the loop 202 connector ramp construction in high school. ... :)

in the mid 90's i worked in sedona for a year. the wife felt sorry for me havin to work outta town, until she came to visit, now we visit there at least once a year.
coffee pot cafe for breakfast, half way between sedona and cottonwood is paige springs and the paige springs bar and restaurant if you want a real old time western atmosphere and it hangs over oak creek ( i believe wed, is all you can eat ribs) jerome is a must, Crescent Moon Picnic Area has one of the most photographed views in the world at red rock crossing (I lived in a mobile right across the street)and for a romantic Italian dinner with the wifey, spices ,on 89a 'bout 2 blocks west of mcdonalds, the only mcd's who's arches aren't golden but teal because of a sedona sign ordinance. and the old trading post at the "Y" for souvenirs. but most of all, relax and enjoy the most beautiful scenery in the country

Rawhide existed until last year at Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak. They moved south of Phoenix due to development in that area. I haven't been to the new location so I can't comment on what it's like. Every time an out of towner used to come visit me I took them to Rawhide. Cool Place.

Ever been to Greasewood Flats or the Tortilla Flats? They're pretty cool places too for out-of-towner's.

I moved out here in 93 and 101 wasn't built and the 51 stopped at Shea Blvd. We've got a lot more concrete out here now. When did you move away?

Steve, take Dave's directions to Sedona. Its a little bit longer but the most scenic route there. I went that route a last December and its great. Here's a pic coming over the mountain from Prescott and down to Jerome.

Whereabouts did they move Rawhide to? My family all lives in Phx & I've been there many times. My folks live in North Phx about ten minutes from there.

I'd second the vote for Tortilla Flats. The drive out there on the Apache Trail is well worth it.

I grew up there - Southern and Gilbert when Southern was still a dirt road to the east - used to ride our horses on it. US 360 ended at McClintock BLVD in those days. 1977 - 1993; I guess you took my place when I left. Spent the better part of 5 years in Flagstaff after that.

Steve when you come or go between Williams and Sedona stay on 89A through Oak Creek Canyon. Sedona also has a great brewery if your in to a nice deck with great beer.

Mike S - I suspect some where near northern Tucson, if it is growing like I have heard... :)
