  • Scaffolding question & source

I have a summer long project on my own house (and barn) to deal with and will need scaffolding to get it done. Been checking the local Want Ads all winter but no luck. Found these guys online: http://www.scaffoldmart.com/2x2-roll...r-package.html

I have very little experience with scaffolding but this package looks complete and the price seems reasonable. I'll be the only person using the set-up and doubt I'll ever need it on a customer job so I'm not concerned about super heavy duty...just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something.

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks, -Norm

Norm, that's a good price and you will find scaffolding quite useful. The aluminum decks are a good idea. What do they charge for delivery?

I bought scaffolding from Falcon Scaffold in Canada and they would be a little more expensive, but they are close to here so shipping was fairly cheap. Once you buy a particular manufacturer you may have to buy more from the same place, for instance the OD on Bil-Jax stuff is slightly smaller than mine so I can't use theirs (which is what they rent locally).

Oh, and hopefully you have a place to store it. I own quite a pile of that stuff now and it's an issue when not in use.

Looks like a Biljax product. Very solid stuff. A couple of questions:

Do you prefer the open end frame style over the step frame? http://www.biljax.com/Products/Described/Product7.aspx

Are you concerned about the lack of an integrated toe board on the guard rails, similar to the toe boards in the picture, below? Any OSHA concerns?

I would also suggest substituting the swivel leveling jacks for the rigid leveling jacks. They're better on uneven surfaces.

Edit: Aubuchon Hardware in your area sells Biljax. See if they price match. http://search.hardwarestore.com/?que...ffold&x=9&y=11

David - I'm checking on delivery. It ships from NC by truck, based on past experience I'm guessing $2-300 at the high end. I have storage for it when not in use - alot of it - almost 10,000 sq ft of barn that I'll be renovating into a shop, office, garage & in-law suite. Just got the septic plans and permits this week.

edit to add: just noticed that some of their packages have free shipping east of the Mississippi. Have to get the word on that.

Rick - I prefer the step frame - and good point on the swivel leveling jacks. The site says they'll alter the package, so I'll get them to price it out with those changes. No OSHA concerns...just work at my home, no subs or helpers, just me.

re: Aubuchon - Thanks for the link but I can pretty much guarantee if I walk into the local store I'm going to get the blank, vacant stare if I ask about scaffolding. I'd rather deal with someone who knows more about it than I do.

          Re: Scaffolding question & source

Myself...as I usually have the scaffolding set up for a period of time in the same area of a house on wheels (first for me to trim, then for the painters to work off of ), I usually put open frame on the first level then step frame up above.

            Norm,
Check Lynn Ladders and Scaffolding. http://www.lynlad.com/page/page/1913914.htm Its a chain outfit all over the east coast. There is like 6 stores in the NE area. I use them for scaffolding and they are great. There products are compatible with Bil Jax tube Size 7, which is the common size in rental yards. At least around here. Good luck.

Rob - I had checked Lynn Ladder, their closest 'store' is over 2 hours away. I know they have top notch gear but they're pricey too.

I ordered this package today: http://www.scaffoldmart.com/2x2-scaf...r-package.html with FREE shipping.

Since I'm not running a crew & only need this for a siding/trim project I'm not too concerned if this is a step below the Biljax or that it may not be compatible with a rental yard gear...given the pricing it's cheaper for me to buy an extra section or two than to burn a half day going to my rental place for the pleasure of paying $25/day to rent.

Thanks to all for the help. -Norm

Since it was mentioned and I had never heard of swiveling jacks - I figured there might be someone else out there that didn't know - here is a picture of the difference between swiveling leveling jacks and rigid leveling jacks.

                        Norm,
You might want to check out any of the larger rental places down by you. Find out when they are going to rotate out their stock. My neighbor bought out such a deal last year. Did he need it? No. The price was great.
