    Default new P-T

Had this in building science, think it fits better here

    Anyone heard of MCQ preservative?

Just got a memo on it, says it's less corrosive than ACQ.
Can be used in direct contact w/ Aluminum flashings.
Fasteners will be back to the way it was w/ CCA treated wood.
IT is not green it is lighter color after treatment and darkens in the sun to a light honey brown color.

I like the sound of it, but I'm not getting excited about it. I got all excited about Timbersil and look where that ended up.

The distribution is a killer on the new building products. News travels fast, but railroad cars and flatbeds seen to move A LOT slower!

What has been your experience with Timbersil? I'm researching treated wood products, and this stuff looks like the holy grail. I saw some references to quality control issues in 2005/2006, but I now see it available from some distributors.

Is it a problem trouble getting the product or is it some defect or false claim about the product itself?

    thanks..

we have been using MCQ here in FL for sometime now and it has a nice advantage of not corroding certain metal connectors. we also use a lot of borate treated wood for sills and sub fascias.

Here in MN, I just ordered some 2x6's for mud sills, and the yard sent out MCQ treated. First I have seen it. My only comment so far is that the color is so light, it's easy to mistake for untreated. From what I have read, it is still corrosive.

We've had MCQ for at least 6 months - ACQ is totally phased out. Seems OK but time will tell.

We have a small local supplier of green building products who is stocking the new Timbersil. I've used it for sills a couple of times. I like it but it sure is pricey. Not sure I could talk a client into using it for a deck. For many of my clients it's not a tough sell for the sill stock to keep PT out of the house.

Sounds like they neglected to read the marketing dreck on Timbersil web site:

Matching price. Our philosophy is that a product that is truly good for you (TimberSIL ®) is a basic right of the consumer that should not cost a price premium. We are cheaper than composite alternatives, cheaper than most plastics, and cost comparable to cedar.

What kind of cedar? CVG? TK? Yellow? Port Orford?

you forgot Aromatic and Western Red but i think they were comparing their product to the cedar in the chips at the bottom of a hamsters cage.

sorry to join so late my yard switched to MCQ a few weeks back and i just got my first shipment of the stuff last week.

they are stocking the micropro... from everything i read on their site it looks like no need to use SS since it doesn't react like the ACQ.

am i right in saying this? i guess this would be one great reason to switch to MCQ.

Although the wood companies' pages say it's comparable to the old CCA, and G90's good enough, Simpson's seems to imply that's BS. From Simpson's website:

Our test results indicated that the potential corrosion rate of Smart Sense-MicroPro (MCQ) treated wood is somewhat less than the ACQ wood that was tested. However, the MCQ corrosion level was not reduced enough to warrant recommending the use of G90 in all applications.

Therefore, for MCQ treated lumber, our minimum recommendation is to use G90 for Interior Dry Applications where the wood is dry (moisture content less than 19%) when installed and will remain dry in-service. For Exterior Applications, wet or dry (that are not Higher Exposure), Simpson recommends ZMAX®/HDG connectors as a minimum. For Higher Exposure environments, such as along coastlines, Simpson recommends Type 303, 304, 305 or 316 Stainless Steel connectors and fasteners. (Note: When using Stainless Steel connectors, use Stainless Steel fasteners. When using ZMAX/HDG connectors, use fasteners galvanized per ASTM A153.)

There's a handy chart, explaining which hardware goes with which treatment, at the bottom of this other page:

    http://www.strongtie.com/productuse/...ion-guide.html

Doesn't seem to be that different from ACQ, at least in Simpson's opinion.

I guess we'll only really know in a year or two.

My yard is now sending out EcoLife wood. The website doesn't say what it's treated with which is weird:
