    Framer

I put mine underneath when possible so you dont have to get creative with an access panel

ok, but my inspector says the access point underneath needs to be firestopped. that's fine, but then he says the motor needs to be vented. is this true?

I never used one that needed to be vented, plus I never had a inspector ask for one to be vented either. They seem to only look if it's accessible and that its grounded. IMO, most tub accesses are useless because of the size and location of them.
Maybe call the manufacturer to see if it needs to be vented, could be the inspector knows something we don't?

    Framer

IRC 2006 for one & two family dwellings :

P2720.1 Access to Pump. Access shall be provided to circulation pumps in accordance with the fixture manufacturer's installation instructions. Where the manufacturer's instructions do not specify the location & minimum size of field fabricated access openings, a 12 in ch by 12 inch minimum size opening shall be installed to provide access to the circulation pump. Where pumps are located more than 2 feet from the opening, an 18 inch by 18 inch minimum size opening shall be installed. A door or panel shall be permitted to close the opening. In all cases, the access opening shall be unobstructed & be of the size necessary to permit the removal & replacement of the circulation pump.

    Hope that helps you.

Some jacuzzi's have, in addittion to the pump, a heating element that the water in the tub is cycled thru to keep the temperature constant. If your tub has this that may be what requires venting.

the jacuzzi is non-heated. it has just a small motor on the side to pump water? it's your typical air-jetted tub.

    chuck,
is that all that the code book says about motor access?

    That's the full paragraph.

There's more about piping & leak testing. Also P2713.3 references the max water temp of 120deg F but I haven't found anything else on access.

did you try the twsp. plumbing inspector? The township may have guidelines which differ from the minimimums stated. There are also electrical codes for allowing the pump to be unplugged if necessary & also be on a gfci circuit.

Let us know what your township requires.
