Addicted to tools
I just need to know if there is any one out there that thinks they are addicted to power tools?
Last week I bought a drill and an AD&E stand. Now I am trying to talk my self out of another DCSMS, I have a DW708, a DW706, a Makita LS1214, and I just sold my DW718 to my helper.
I had to walk away from 2 tool sales, with DeWalt, Delta and Porter Cable reps on site.
Does any one have this problem?

Re: Addicted to tools
John;
Your not alone buddy. My truck is full of tools, my garage is full of tools, my tool shed is full of tools, my fully restored 72 El Camino with the $10,000 motor in it, is full of tools. I just can't help myself. I've got every tool catalogue on the planet, alphabetized and filed neatly in my home office. My girlfriend calls it my tool porn. I can't drive past a toolstore. I gotta go in just to see if there's a new tool that's come out since I was in the store yesterday. JLC Live is coming to town in 10 days and I started sweatin' and droolin' 4 days ago. There's no denial here. I know I got a problem. I can quit anytime I want. I just don't feel like it right now.Tom

Tom - how did I know you'd be responding? Something in a name I guess. I am more reserved in the tool buying world. I get what I need to do the best job possible but avoid the extras when I can - this equals longer winter trips. We are shooting for 4 months next winter.

Toolwhore,
As far as JLCLive goes, it was nice knowing you. If the Big Blue Bosch trailer doesn't suck you dry, all the little booths that are selling specialty tools that you rarely see in stores will for sure.
You have to have a plan of attack at JLCLive because some of the deals aren't that great (you can do better on the internet). Some deals to look out for are Bosch (you can quasi-haggle or at least get free stuff), Fein (on blades and consumables), Senco package deals, Stabila levels.
One thing to try to buy is from CH Hanson. I never heard of them before, but they make an insulation cutting knife that works great AND one the BEST tools I've ever spent $5 on--a magnetic stud finder. It's very similar in concept to Gary Katz's totlock magnet, only I could actually FIND this one to buy. I haven't missed a stud since March.

Re: Addicted to tools
I just had to respond to this post. Yes, I'm in such a bad state that if I don't get it under control I'm going to be retaining an attorney for a divorce. I just can't stop myself from getting every tool I see. Festool will be the nail in the coffin. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in this.

Re: Addicted to tools
Does anyone else see a trend here? No matter how many DeFault tools you own, you will still suffer from "tool envy".

fyi, I just heard from a mechanic friend of mine, that the company that manufactures Snap-on tools, just moved their facilities overseas.

Re: Addicted to tools
Festool...no kidding. Now THAT's an addiction I can understand: You pay once but get the same high every time you use the tool.
And I hate to have to correct Whiskey again, but I can't help it!!!
You've got the wrong lyrics for this thread, man.
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

C.H. Hanson is a company based here in Chicago which takes "concept" tools (many which started as ideas developed by frustrated tradesmen), and gets them into manufacturing and finds markets for them.
So if you have any ideas for cool new tools, talk to them. I've heard that they want you to have a patent before approaching them.

You'd be surprised how good of a tool shopper I am. I research every tool I buy, and never buy unless it's a whoppin' deal. And as for salesmen, (I despise salesmen) I usually leave them lying in a fetal position on the floor, sucking their thumbs and crying for their mothers as I walk out the door. So don't you guys worry about me, I'll be just fine.Tom

Re: Addicted to tools
This is great. You guys make me look somewhat normal. I know a have a problem, but you guys are addicts! I love it.
Maybe if I gave up all my hobbies I'd have more money for tools. Golf, diving and mountain biking can get expensive too.
I am saving up for Festool. I'd be getting the system now, but I am about to drop 5k or so on a trailer. I'd much rather be playing with the saw and router on the sweet track system with a nice vac, but that'll have to wait.
Are there ever any sales on Festool stuff, other then when they are coming out with a new product and trying to move out the older stuff, which is still great stuff. They remind me of Apple in this regard.Last edited by mdannolfo; 05-10-2006 at 06:53 PM.
