Miscellaneous Items
I don’t know if it ever happens to you. Often times I come home from a job with some issue or item that sounds to me as something interesting to share but it is not serious or laughable enough to be made into a thread.
I am starting this thread to bring up all those little items that are never shared and to ask all those simple questions that are never asked.
Poor miter joint. Nice looking casing.
I got a call from a man to work on three doors at his house that didn’t work properly.
They were part of a expensive, high quality remodel.
The client told me that he was happy with everything the general contractor did except for the doors.
I came home that day with a juicy check and a couple of pictures of some of the good and bad work those guys did.
Look at one picture how poorly done was that joint on top. And the guy sold it like that without attempting to change the angle of the miter to make those two pieces meet as they are supposed to.
The other picture shows a door with an attractive casing.

Another challenging miter joint, and another topic how would you make that cut. ? How would you position the top molding on your miter box to get the perfect cut to match the bottom straight molding so they intercept at the precise spot. Looks like a challange to the carpenter who did it, Ok Gary , Jeff B
Jim your on.

Re: Miscellaneous Items
Al,
nice picture (on the right) probably done with 22 1/2 on all pieces instead of 45. looks good, I will try it out next door casing job.
I saw a crown molding done that way, instead of a 45 return into the wall the guy did a 22 1/2 and then another 22 1/2 into the wall. I wish Ihad my camera that day. it really looked great.Kreg

Re: Miscellaneous Items
Lay the top piece on top of the side piece and draw a line from the outer cross to the inner cross. Put straight piece on miter saw and find angle. Tack curved piece to 1x to give straight edge against fence & cut. Different panel widths would require new angle because of upsweep of curve.

Re: Miscellaneous Items
yeah, like try bisecting the angle that they meet at like steve said. the two outside and the two inside edges are gonna cross somewhere arn't they?

Re: Miscellaneous Items
As long as the trim is the same width & profile the angle should be irrelavent. No different that if the top of the door was curved. The head trim still has to intersect with the sides. Just a matter of finding the correct angle.
I got the new Wood Craft cataloge today. Lots of handy time saving tools for finish carpentry & woodworking in there. Might want to check it out.Two roads diverged in a narrow wood. I took the path less traveled.

Re: Miscellaneous Items
I'm off the 9. If you were driving south take the 9 to the 31 exit off the 17 in Little River. Go about 2.5 miles North on the 9 to the 9 & 57 intersection (there's a Sav on Drugs & BELL & BELL GMC dealership. Turn left at the light on to the 57. Go down about 1.2 miles & turn right on MT Zion Rd. There's a sign that says Woodlyn Meadow there. On Mt Zion Rd take the first left into Woodlyn Meadow. I live at 409 Cypress View Ave (tan house w/ white trim. black dodge 4x4 in drive).
I went to Charleston about a week ago. To guitar center of course. Two roads diverged in a narrow wood. I took the path less traveled.

Re: Miscellaneous Items
Carl,
The angle is irrelevant but bisecting it is most important to assure the material at the miter is the same length. Example- cut one side of trim at 30 degrees the other at 60, it turns 90 but the cut faces are different lengths.

Re: Miscellaneous Items
Just as a clarification, my posts are regarding the curving panel moulding on the door not the casing.

Re: Miscellaneous Items
Like it has been said, all the carpenter needed to do was to find out at which angle the two pieces of trim met and split it. That will have produced a perfect match.
