The Toto Drake toilet is a very good product. We have installed about 8 of them in the last 3 weeks. A little more money but you get what you pay for.

I have a Gerber with the e-long bowl that has been virtually uncloggable for the last 5 years. The water spot is dismally small, though. But, most of the low flows are...no big news there. Make friends with Mr. toilet brush in any case.

Re: low flow toilets that work
Jeff, I sold "low-flow" toilets for 6 years. What I learned is that most current models do fine; in six years I had one complaint, and that was a defective. The troubles are from the ones first introduced; manufacturers had just had to build new "3.5 gallon" toilets, now the Feds said "1.6," and they used the bowls from the 3.5. If you look around, you can also find a good "water spot" (I sold Crane, Kohler, Am Std; all had models with 8" x 8" or bigger.)
But - pay attention to the _vent_, these things need a good one. Also, they _don't_ like 4" waste -- there isn't enough water to fill the pipe and "float" the waste; and, not much over the standard 1/4" per foot slope, or the water runs out from under the waste.
Good luck!
Christian

We just installed am American Standard. It was a stock item at Home Depot. I was dreading it, but it works really, really well. I have heard the same things about 3" vs. 4" line and the gentle slope that are mentioned above.

Re: low flow toilets that work
Jeff,
The city I live in requires us to retrofit 5 to 6 old toilets to build each new house or even remodel a business. In the past few years we have installed more than 35 Kohler "Wellworth" toilets (including my own home and small rental) in houses, community halls, churches and apartments and we have yet to receive a complaint.

I've also installed Kohler "Wellworth" toilets and am very pleased with them. We had to replace one of our old toilets, and after seeing how well the new type work , we replaced another perfectly good older toilet with this type.

We have 4" drains and they work just fine.

I just installed an American Standard Cadet. It's wonderful.Reminds me of the good old days when a good flush was easy to come by.Great water spot and you can adjust the flush to suit your needs.

Re: low flow toilets that work
I installed an Elger Patriot el bowl in my own home and a 17 tall in a comercial installation. while it does have an ocasional problem clearing the bowl with an extra large "content" most of the time (99.99%) it works great. Mine will always cclear the bowl if the handle is held down. It seems it only flushes 3/4 of it's water on average. I know i could adjust this out, but why. It's like having an extra flush without the wait or waste.

TOTO Definetly is the best 1 flush low consumption toilet i have come across. Used either 3" or 4" waste line.

Re: low flow toilets that work
I moved in to a new house in Feb, 2001. One toilet started clogging after 2 mo.; the other soon followed. The contractor replaced both toilets with American Standard Cadets, which seem like good toilets. However, right away they both started clogging. I am wondering if the drain might be clogged. There are no kids, so I don't think anything (such as toys, etc.) could have gotten flushed down to cause problems. The showers, sinks, and liquids in the toilets all drain fine. Just solids are a problem. Any suggestions? I'm considering trying a pressure assisted toilet, but would prefer to get these to work.

Re: low flow toilets that work
Gentlemen;
When the Government started mandating that toilets use less water the manufactures just ran less water through. But with the 1.6 toilets this doesn't work. These water closets require carefull balancing. By this I mean that they have a "sweet spot" for a set amount of water to flow that will work. Too little water and of course there is not enough "push" to clear the bowel. Too much water and it will overwhelm the system causing the "vaccumm" (flush) to stop.
These water closets therefore must be "set" when installed. This may require some time but it will result in clear water after every flush. The old days of increasing the float to allow for more water or installing a "float" on the flapper worked great on the old 5 gallon units. And to some extent on the 3.5 gallon units. But more water on a 1.6 gallon unit will not work. In fact it will make matters worse. The extra water is like pouring water into a suction, which will instantly shut it off. Which is why one must "set" the flush.
Good Luck!
