Re: Lapping floor joists over girder

Every house I farmed in Cape Cod back in 1984were all 2x8 floor joists with no spans greater than 14'. A lot of additions I've framed we have to use 2x8's to match the existing joists on old homes.

Re: Lapping floor joists over girder

That's why I said the only time it's not done is with conventional lumber when you cannot get them long enough. You'd have to have at least two girders to span 40' with 2x8 floor joists anyway. Who's...

16' is a no brainer to do in one piece. Not even worth a second thought.

Re: Lapping floor joists over girder

It's always done in one piece with I-joists or conventional lumber. The only time it's not done in one piece is with conventional lumber if the span is to long to get in one piece. No reason to lap...

  8. Re: Inverted Header...nagging concern...help appreciated.

You have no concerns at all! This is done every day with no problems with unfinished or finished attics. 90% of the time when done with an unfinished attic there is no decking down. You have a...

Re: Header required in gable walls?

    Andy,

Flush headers sit on the top plates whether you cut them out or nut. Bottom of header is flush with bottom of ceiling joists. What 1/4" are you talking about?

Re: Header required in gable walls?

    Andy,

Why would a flush header be a weird application? They are done all the time. Or, are you saying it's weird for this situation?

    Jim,

Even when I framed the way you guys frame I did the shoes the same way, stopped them at all door openings never having to go back and cut out openings. We've had this discussion years ago.
