Every house I farmed in Cape Cod back in 1984were all 2x8 floor joists with no spans greater than 14'. A lot of additions I've framed we have to use 2x8's to match the existing joists on old homes.

That's why I said the only time it's not done is with conventional lumber when you cannot get them long enough. You'd have to have at least two girders to span 40' with 2x8 floor joists anyway. Who's...

It's always done in one piece with I-joists or conventional lumber. The only time it's not done in one piece is with conventional lumber if the span is to long to get in one piece. No reason to lap...

Andy,
Flush headers sit on the top plates whether you cut them out or nut. Bottom of header is flush with bottom of ceiling joists. What 1/4" are you talking about? -

Even when I framed the way you guys frame I did the shoes the same way, stopped them at all door openings never having to go back and cut out openings. We've had this discussion years ago. -
