  • Better talk to my insurance agent

I've worked for these clients before - they live in a landmark house here. The story behind the pipe organ is very interesting, but for now the fun part will be renovating the bathroom that sits right above the mechanical room for the organ. Access to the room is this tiny space to the side of the organ - we'll need to work in there for at least a day moving some cast iron drainage. What could possibly go wrong?

What could go wrong? Maybe they start playing the thing and blow out your eardrums? That type of thing you talking about?

It looks like a pre-1978 organ, better break a piece off and send it in for sampling.

Save the testing cost, just go ahead and abate the organ before the job starts.

No need to abate- I'll send a crew over and we'll just encapsulate with some spray foam.

My organ is bigger. It's behind these 2 doors in the dining room, goes up 2 full stories through the master bedroom into the attic. There's a ginormous 2ft diameter steel column in the basement supporting it.

Ted - this is in your old neighborhood.

But can you play your organ at all hours of the day or night?

Hey Norm, nice cast iron baseboard in that second picture.

We're on a job right now that has very similar stuff.

Norm, is that seriously your house? You play? Or, does everyone in New England have one of those?

its not a New England thing, all we had when I was growing up was the K-tell Van Hallen keyboard.

Make sure your plumber keeps track of which pipes are which.

This is my In-Laws' house. They are up near Saratoga Springs/Mechanicville, NY. I am the on-call consultant for their complete renovation.

The organ in the pictures was original to the church, circa 1875. It was built/cobbled together with both pre and post Civil War parts and was by a famous (brain fart, can't remember his name) organ builder of the day. My FIL resurrected the organ with the help of a local craftsman. Every 2 yrs there is a symposium up there for antique organists and my In-Laws take part in it. For 2 weeks they go from venue to venue having concerts on all the historic organs in the Saratoga Springs area.
