  • Spiral stairway build

I am getting ready to start on a spiral stairway as soon as the wood arrives. For now..I am building a drum form that will be used to make up the 315 degree turning handrail.

The center spine of this spiral will be a 10 inch diameter column that I will have the tread supports mortised through both sides of the column.

    More pictures hopefull next week.

You can go to my website and scroll around in my Past Projects section and see some similar spirals I have built.

I am setting the barrel form vertically here. You can see the sacrificial first laminate that smooths the curve around the studs for the rail laminates. Later I will post build pictures as progress is made. This is going to be supplied as a do-it-yourself install.

Great Stan, can't wait. Never saw finished pics of the slide/stair. Good to see you back on JLC.

My knotty maple came in and I have been making the treads and tread supports, mortising the column, and other aspects.

                Stan,
Do you transport and install the stairs assembled or just mock it up, disassemble and reassemble and install on site?

That looks great Stan. I've never built a spiral set, I did set one that came from the York spiral stair company in Maine. Pic included. Just curious how you lay out the rise and run on a cylinder? Id think the rise is straight forward but just a matter of squaring around the center post. Your reply can be as simple as possible for a novice. Thanks, Mike.

                    Stan,
Very nice. I like the circular router jig a lot! I'd sure like to know how you glued up the column and got it round. Among other things... :)

                      Re: Spiral stairway build

Guys- Sorry about no responses to your questions. I was having trouble logging in, andmy new passwords werent letting me on. Got it fixed.

Darrel- I break the spiral down, transport it and then assemble it onsite.

Mike- The run was figured out this way. This stairway had 13 treads turning 315 degrees. I wrapped a band around the column and marked 360 degrees......then took off 45 degrees from that to get the 315 degrees. This was divided up into 13 divisions and my band was layd out with 13 equal segments from 0 to 315 degrees. I indexed this band by following a joint between two staves and that controlled the layout. There is more to it that I cant type it all here.

Gary......If it told you how I made the column....I would have to shoot you! ha. I typically make a bunch of staves.....12 staves with 15 degree sides...splines in them....and use simple rope clamps and sticks to clamp them all together.
I do spiral seminars once in awhile and I leave most of the explaining for that.

These spirals are real cool looking in my opinion....very strong ......and very fun to make. The handrail is the hardest part.
